P. H. Hutton, Philippe Ariès and the Politics of French Cultural History

vendredi 25 juillet 2008, par Guillaume Gros

Patrick H. Hutton, University of Massachusetts Press, 2004, 244 pages.

The Politics of the Young Philippe Ariès » (French Historical Studies, vol. 21, n° 3, été 1998, pp. 476-495) et « The Postwar Politics of Philippe Ariès », Journal of Commentary History, juillet 1999, vol. 34, n°3, pp. 365-382).

Sans être une biographie au sens strict du terme, le livre de Patrick H. Hutton suit les grandes étapes de la vie de Philippe Ariès en veillant toujours à placer l’historien « in the context of the historiographical renaissance of the 1960s, relating his life and his work to the new directions in historical scholarship and the theoretical issues of the day » [3].

He was both a political reactionary and a path-breaking scholar (…) » (4e de couverture).
